AbstractObjective: To compare students scores of practical anatomy exam with the results of OSPE to measure their learning and to explore their perception of learning through dissection and plastic model.
Methodology: This concurrent mixed method study was conducted at Anatomy department, Army Medical College, National University of Medical Sciences, Rawalpindi, Pakistan from January 2017 to September 2017 and second year MBBS students were selected through convenience sampling technique. It was conducted in two phases. The first phase of study was to measure student scores in the spotting component of the gross anatomy examinations and the total scores obtained in their practical exam. The second phase was to measure students perceptions using a valid questionnaire on learning preferences. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 22.
Results: A strong positive linear significant relationship was found between gross spotting and total practical marks with r=0.838 (p<0.001). Most of the students declared that they felt relaxed studying anatomy using cadavers for gross anatomy assessments. However, some of the students found it easy to orientate themselves with the fresh cadaveric specimens.
Conclusion: Those students who used cadavers for learning performed better in both OSPE and written exams.Key words: Assessment, gross anatomy education, student perceptions.
